Why the Food Industry Needs Better Food Testing
94% of shoppers trust their grocery store and food brands to ensure that the food they purchase is safe. Consumers are increasingly informed and are demanding wholesome and safe food to eat. (FMI U.S. Shopper Trends, 2016)*
Companies with product recalls risk potential legal action and criminal charges as a result of consumer illness or death from foodborne pathogens that are often due to inadequate or lack of food safety testing. The costs of litigating those claims, including the loss of recalled product, can typically exceed USD$100 million.
Risks of Not Testing or Inaccurate Food Testing
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one-half of the global burden of foodborne diseases are caused by pathogenic hazards that includes Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli.
Increasing food recalls has led to public awareness demand for safe food. Governments have responded by expanding food safety regulations and legislations throughout the global food supply chain to better protect public health.
A global survey of 700 lab managers on their food safety testing challenges reveals that:
Faster and more accurate testing contributes to increased product throughput and efficiencies for both the testing lab and food processor.

Our customer is one of the largest integrated fruit and vegetable processing companies in the United States of America. They have a transparent commitment to food safety in order to remain competitive and invest in various food safety technologies.
During the annual food safety plan re-assessment, our customer identified that an inappropriate enrichment media was being used for the environmental sampling for the presence of Listeria. This resulted in unreliable accuracy and validity of test results, which led to additional retesting time, false positives and false negative results, and undermined the integrity of the food safety plan.
Our customer identified three key goals that they wanted achieve:
The FoodChek Science Team collaborated with our customer to run several trials between competing mediums and determine which one produced the best results. The verification approach included challenge studies with competing enrichment mediums and mirror studies using third party service labs.
